811 RETAIL STORE
Bathroom Toile Installation Case Study
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Project: 811 Retail Store Custom Toile Bathroom Wallcovering
Location: Kansas City, MO
Type: Commercial Retail Installation
Collaborator: Porter House KC
As part of the launch of Porter House KC’s incubator retail space at 811 Retail Store, Complex Flavors Home + Life was commissioned to design a custom toile wallpaper installation for the restroom experience. The goal was to transform an overlooked utility space into a culturally immersive storytelling moment that reflected the founders’ journey and deep ties to Kansas City.
The bathroom needed to feel intentional, elevated, and aligned with the identity of the incubator space while still functioning within a compact commercial footprint. Rather than using generic wallcoverings, the vision was to create a memorable design feature that blended narrative, nostalgia, and local culture.
The challenge was to:
Create a wallpaper concept that felt artistic yet commercially viable
Incorporate meaningful Kansas City landmarks and founder references
Develop a seamless repeating toile pattern suitable for installation
Elevate the emotional experience of the space through storytelling and detail
THE CHALLENGE
-
The goal of this project was to transform a highly functional commercial restroom into an immersive storytelling experience rooted in culture, nostalgia, and identity. Rather than treating the bathroom as an afterthought, the space became an opportunity to create a memorable design moment that reflected both the founders’ journey and the spirit of Kansas City.
Inspired by traditional toile patterns, the custom wallcovering reimagines classic storytelling motifs through an urban lens, blending architectural landmarks, community references, and hand-drawn illustrations into a contemporary commercial environment.
-
Complex Flavors developed a custom digital hand-drawn toile wallpaper inspired by classic toile patterns but reimagined through a modern urban lens. The design highlighted important locations and symbols connected to the founders’ personal and community story, including:
Bishop Hogan High School
Lincoln High School
Arno Park
Linwood YMCA
Porter House KC branding elements
Two visual directions were explored:
Urban Canvas — a softer neutral palette inspired by understated urban sophistication
Grayscale Grit — a moodier industrial-inspired interpretation rooted in resilience and city texture
The final toile pattern incorporated:
Repeating 12x12 swatches for continuity
Layered architectural illustrations
Organic connecting elements like birds, clouds, and florals
Neutral earthy and grayscale tones to maintain sophistication within the compact restroom environment
-
What was once a standard commercial restroom became a visually immersive extension of the Porter House KC brand experience. The custom wallcovering transformed the space through layered storytelling, cohesive pattern repetition, and elevated materiality.
The installation demonstrates how thoughtful surface design can:
Increase visual impact in overlooked spaces
Strengthen brand identity through environmental storytelling
Create memorable customer interactions
Introduce warmth and personality into commercial interiors
Blur the line between art, culture, and functional design
By wrapping the entire room in the custom toile pattern, the restroom evolved into a destination within the retail environment rather than simply a utility space.

CLOSING
Because design is not just about how a space looks.
It’s about what it communicates. What it remembers.
And how it makes people feel the moment they walk in.
This project embodies Complex Flavors Home + Life’s belief that even the smallest spaces can hold meaning, culture, and connection through intentional design.
